Extended time is vital to computer-mediated communication because it allows for the people interacting to communicate at a pace that is slower than regular face-to-face interactions. The extended time aspect of SIP theory is advantageous to the development of interpersonal relationships using CMC. According to Griffin (2015), there are two other factors that contribute to creating intimacy in online interactions and these are anticipated future interaction and chronemics (p. 126). Since Emma and James are communicating through text message and Tinder private messaging, they have more time to formulate a well thought out response to keep the other person involved. Even though Emma and James are communicating through CMC, that doesn’t stop their relationship from developing, they are communicating as much as they possibly can without overstepping any personal comfort boundaries. With their relationship moving forward at a level where James and Emma are comfortable, it allows fo r extended time to work in favor of the evolution of their relationship.
